The Buttonville Municipal Airport in Markham, which was originally slated for mixed-use development with housing, office, and commercial spaces, now faces a new proposal for an entirely industrial complex. The city of Markham believes this shift is justified by the current demand in real estate and the economy. While there is a housing crisis, officials argue that commercial land and office space are now more in demand due to changes in employment needs and supply chain weaknesses highlighted by the pandemic.

The proposed redevelopment includes 11 industrial buildings of varying sizes and additional infrastructure. Despite Markham's current slow pace in meeting the province's housing target, city officials emphasize the importance of creating places where people can work and earn a living, alongside housing options. They want to encourage residents to both live and work within the city to reduce traffic and support local employment opportunities.

However, some experts express concerns about potential traffic problems resulting from an auto and truck-oriented facility in the area. The decision on the proposal is expected to be made by the end of the year after a public meeting to gather community input. The city will determine the appropriate mix of land uses for the site, considering both employment and housing needs.
